Product

Tobago Gold, Tobago Gold Chocolate Rum Cream,

Alcohol by volume 17%

Developed in the Caribbean

Tobago Gold was developed in Arnos Vale on the small Caribbean Island of Tobago. The finest cocoa the island had to offer was mixed with a very characteristic blend of local spices and fruits, which are growing wild all over the island, and then blended with a carefully selected white rum, traditionally used in the region.

The flavour was heavily inspired by the traditional cocoa tea, where Caribbean spices and pure cocoa is boiled with water and milk, in order to create the Caribbean spicier version of Hot Chocolate. This tradition goes back hundreds of years in time, and there are probably as many recipes as there are families making cocoa tea.

Produced in Europe

Tobago Gold has a small production of Tobago Gold Chocolate Rum Cream on Tobago. However, due to the scarceness of bigger volumes of high quality ingredients and efficient production facilities, most of our production is now done in the Netherlands.

Tobago Gold is continuously investigating possibilities to establish an efficient production in Trinidad & Tobago, and in the future we do hope to have a possibility to create jobs and income for Tobagonians, by a bigger scale local production facility on the island where Tobago Gold was born.

Tobago Gold Insider Facts
  • It took over a year of numerous tests in the local kitchen in Arnos Vale, before the team successfully created the masterful blend now known as Tobago Gold Chocolate Rum Cream. Without the Corona pandemic enabling more time for creativity and craft at home, this might never have happened.

  • Tobago Gold beverages are the result of traditional Caribbean cocoa and spice growing, leaning on knowledge and experience going back as far as to the Maya and Inca Indians. Cocoa means “Food for the Gods” and contains a number of healthy antioxidants, and is proved to have many health benefits.

  • Tobago Gold only uses a mix of the finest quality of cocoa, Criollo and Trinitario.

  • The flavour is inspired by the traditional cocoa tea, where Caribbean spices and pure cocoa is boiled with water and milk, in order to create the Caribbean spicier version of Hot Chocolate. This tradition goes back hundreds of years in time, and there are probably as many recipes as there are families making cocoa tea.

  • Tobago Gold has a darker brown color than most other chocolate cream liqueurs, this is natural coloring due to our high level of high quality cocoa, which also gives the rich smooth chocolate taste similar to a dark high quality chocolate bar.

  • Tobago Gold uses a carefully selected white rum with a pointy alcohol profile. The reason for this are partly that this kind of rum is the traditional kind produced by the locals on Tobago. But more importantly, the purpose is to bring forward the unique hot-spicy flavour created by the blend of cocoa and Caribbean spices and fruits, in the best possible way.

  • Less sugar, more spice! Tobago Gold has the highest cocoa to sugar ratio possible, in order to still be defined as cream liqueur. This means our Chocolate Rum Cream is less sweet and therefore also better preferred by those who search for flavour rather than sweetness in their beverage.

  • Tobago Gold is continuously investigating possibilities to establish an efficient production in Trinidad & Tobago, and in the future we do hope to have a possibility to create jobs and income for Tobagonians, by a bigger scale local production facility on the island where Tobago Gold was born.

  • During Tobago Gold first year of Award participation, where we competed in ten awards in total, we so far won nine awards in total. One of the most prestigious one being the Double Gold for taste in the San Fransisco World Spirits Competition 2022.

  • Our award-winning bottle design was created by Tobagonian talent and Tobago Gold designer, Che Hernandez. She wanted to create a bottle with a clear connection to our Caribbean heritage and our core ingredient: cocoa. The design is inspired by the Trinitario cocoa tree and the local cocoa estate on which its grown. Che was fascinated with the idea that one tree had several cocoa pods growing with various vibrant colours around it, and she successfully transformed this fascination into a unique Caribbean bottle design.
What is Tobago Gold?

Tobago Gold is a new twist on an old tradition. By combining the finest cocoa with Caribbean flavours from the traditional Caribbean cocoa tea, and mixing this blend with rum, we have created a unique cream liqueur with less sugar and more spice, a premium profile with an award-winning taste!

Crafting Tobago Gold

Tobago Gold was also inspired by the long tradition of Street Carnivals on the island of Trinidad and Tobago. Being from

the home of one of the world's most famous carnivals, we know that true joy and celebration isn’t created out of nothing. On the contrary, high demands are put on craftsmanship, creativity and dedication. This is something we carry with us in our work with Tobago Gold: not to spare any effort to create our bottles filled with liquid joy.

Our cocoa

Tobago Gold only uses a mix of the finest cocoa beans; Criollo and Trinitario.

The Trinitario bean came into existence following the near destruction of Trinidad’s Criollo Plantations by a hurricane in 1727. Forastero seeds were brought from Venezuela and cross-fertilised with the native Criollo beans resulting in the Trinitario. These beans are found particularly in the Caribbean and represent about 12% of the world’s cocoa production.

In Spanish, Criollo means “of local origin” This is a very high quality cocoa bean that is very aromatic and lacks bitterness. The Criollo is used in luxury chocolate, but rarely alone since it is very scarce and is becoming less and less available. It represents less than 3% of the world’s production.

Our cocoa comes from one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high quality chocolate and cocoa products. Our supplier aims to make sustainable cocoa a norm, and Tobago Gold is participating in their programme dedicated to sustainable cocoa. Their mission is to improve the livelihood of cocoa farmers and their communities through the production of sustainable,

entrepreneurial farming, improved productivity, and community development.

Tobago Gold – You only get one feeling, you want more!

When Carlo Attisano, the Deputy Chairman of the Worldwide Sommelier Foundation and also the wine Advisor of the Pope (!) in Rome tasted our rum cream for the first time, this is what he said:

“Extremely well balanced between Rum and Cocoa, and the added Spices are perfectly selected giving it a touch of freshness. Really a very pleasant, elegant, hot-spicy sensation. When the glass is empty, you have only one feeling – you want more!”
